TROUTDALE, Ore.—Tube Specialties Company (TSCO), a leading pipe and tube fabricator, is celebrating 50 years of supplying the automotive, trucking, medical and other industries with quality parts and components.  Headquartered in Troutdale, Oregon, TSCO has additional manufacturing facilities in Statesville, North Carolina and Saltillo, Mexico. The family-owned and operated company employs 375.

Dick Weyhrich founded the company in 1963 when he started hand bending tubing in his Portland, Oregon garage to supply Hyster Company, a forklift manufacturer, with brake and fuel lines.

“I knew there was a market for a local manufacturer,” said Weyhrich. “At the time, everything was coming out of the Midwest, and we had businesses here in the Northwest that needed local suppliers to deliver product when they needed it.”

Supplying customers what they need, when they need it is still TSCO’s business model. A lot has changed since Weyhrich set up shop in his garage—three fully automated, state-of-the-art production facilities and a raft of administrative expertise support today’s business—but working closely with customers and anticipating their needs remains constant.

Dick Weyhrich set that standard early. Before just-in-time and lean manufacturing became buzzwords, he worked with his customers to supply them with quality parts on an as-needed basis, allowing them to reduce inventory and save money.  “I don’t think there was any name for it back then. I was just getting my customers parts when they needed them.”

Today, TSCO is owned and managed by Dick’s sons, Gary and Mark, who serve as co-presidents.

“We have expanded the business and strengthened TSCO’s manufacturing capabilities,” said Gary Weyhrich, “but we still deliver products directly to our customers’ production facilities as often as they need them, as we always have.”

“We challenge ourselves to meet the constantly escalating quality and engineering standards of our customers,” said Mark Weyhrich, “And these days, we are focusing on being environmentally friendly manufacturers.
